New Brisbane Convention Centre on Track
RNA chief executive Jonathan Tunny and Brisbane Marketing Convention Bureau director Annabel Sullivan used this week's AIME platform to unveil interior designs of the new convention centre and the role it will have in the multi-billion dollar RNA Showgrounds regeneration project.
"The $59 million Royal International Convention Centre (RICC) is stage one of a A$2.9 billion regeneration project to transform the Showgrounds into a vibrant year-round destination offering a unique lifestyle and cultural hub," said Tunny.
"It is Australia's largest 'brownfield' development, is the most significant urban renewal project in Brisbane since South Bank and includes 340,000sqm of new residential, commercial and retail precinct development."
Tunny said the 22,000sqm multi-level centre is set to hold international, national and local business events which in 2010-11 pumped a total of A$212 million into the Brisbane economy.
"Situated in one of the fastest-growing regions in Australia, the new RICC is ideally located 1.6 kilometres from Brisbane's central business district and 15 minutes from international and domestic airports," he said.
"It will have pride of place on the 22 hectare RNA Showgrounds site, which is Brisbane's biggest indoor/outdoor events venue, attracting millions of visitors a year."
Tunny said the new RICC offered 'Australian first' features including a custom-built operable ceiling grid system which can cut exhibition set-up time by up to 24 hours.
"Our catering facilities will be world class and feature 12 of the latest designed self-cooking centres, capable of serving 2,600 plates in 40 minutes.
"The ovens enable us to produce fresh food on a daily basis for large numbers and feature a computerised system to track and monitor the quality of the food being served."

CB series -Sri Lanka Vs India on 21st February - Gabba, Brisbane
Even though Sri Lanka is down in the points table, tomorrows win with bonus point against India will enhance the morale of the team further. See the points table below:
| Teams | Mat | Won | Lost | Tied | N/R | Pts | Net RR |
| Australia | 5 | 3 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 14 | +0.433 |
| India | 5 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 10 | -0.672 |
| Sri Lanka | 4 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 7 | +0.323 |
Sri Lanka only played 4 matches and maintaining plus Net RR. And from last match against Australia captain Mahela as well as Dilshan back to their normal form with Sangakkara. More importantly Faveez Maharoof proves his quality with fine bowling figures of 8 overs, one maiden, 18 runs and two wickets.
The fielding was exceptional and first time in Sri Lankan cricket history we got three all-rounders in the team who can bowl fast medium and medium fast (Maharoof,Angelow and Thisara). In match against Australia Kulasekara was well supported to Malinga with better Slow left-arm orthodox bowing of Rangana Herath. And up to now in the series Sri Lanka headed by largest victory in terms of wickets and runs (vs Australia).
In bowling Herath,Maharoof(plays only one match) as well as Kulasekera are in the top five slots under “Best Economy rates” category. Dinesh chandimal is in the fourth place among top runners (but he played only four matches as all others played five matches) .The captaincy of Mahela in this series also has been hailed by many cricket experts as well.
On the other hand India having all sought of problems as their inform Match wining captain MS Dhoni has been suspended for one ODI .He was the third most run getter in the series. Furthermore there was a question mark on fitness of Virender Sehwag and specially Sachin Tendulkar who went for a precautionary MRI scan after being hit on the helmet by a Brett Lee bouncer.
So there is a chance to Sri Lanka to win with extra point which would take the team into number two spot in points table. But more importantly it will further boost the morale of the team and cricket loving community in Sri Lanka. And also special gratitude should be given for the Sri Lankans who are living in Australia supporting our team with always playing “our songs” with specific local “Baila” with our identity. This uniqueness can be observed in any part of the world which Sri Lankan cricketers are playing and separate social research can be done on that as well.

Aussies Pound India at the Gabba, Brisbane
Australia have rocketed to the top of the tri-series standings as Ben Hilfenhaus continued to torment India in his return to one-day cricket.Replacing an ill Clint McKay for his first ODI in more than two years, Hilfenhaus took a career-best 5-33 as the home side pounded the tourists by 110 runs on Sunday night.
But both sides face growing worries about modern-day greats Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar who were both made to look second-rate with ugly failures at the Gabba.
A tired Ponting’s immediate one-day future is on shaky ground after he looked all at sea making just seven – his fifth straight single-figure failure – as Australia posted 5-288.
But the stand-in skipper, due for a rest with Michael Clarke expected to return from injury this week, still managed to marshall his troops to a convincing victory by routing India for 178.
The tourists had no answers to the pace and swing of new-ball duo Hilfenhaus and Brett Lee (3-49) who ripped through their top-order to effectively kill off the contest at 4-36.
Skipper MS Dhoni delayed the inevitable with a patient 56 but once he holed out to Hilfenhaus, in the 38th over, a bonus point was in the bag for Australia.
Australia’s dominant win takes them to the top of the table on 13 points – three ahead of India (10), who will meet Sri Lanka (7) on Tuesday.
While Australia’s selectors have a dilemma in how to handle Ponting’s twilight years, especially with the next World Cup three years away, India appear to have just as big a problem in managing Tendulkar.
The Little Master, searching for his hundredth international century for the past 11 months, was made to look like a rookie as he upper cut Hilfenhaus straight to Xavier Doherty at third man to fall for three.
While Ponting has just 18 runs in the tri-series at an embarrassing average of 3.6, Tendulkar has 68 runs at 17 and hasn’t looked like challenging for his milestone century.
Like Tendulkar, who lasted 12 balls, Ponting struggled to find the middle of his bat and the gaps in the field in a painful 26-ball stay after David Warner propelled the home side to 1-70 with a breezy 43.
Australia’s momentum halted with his innings and only an impressive century stand by Mike Hussey (59 off 52) and adopted Queenslander Peter Forrest (52 off 71) put the home side on track on a good batting wicket.
Late lusty hitting by Dan Christian (30no off 18) and David Hussey (26no off 20) then ensured India would face a tough chase as they blasted 65 off the last six overs.
India shot themselves in the foot in the field with four dropped catches, including two off Mike Hussey, and two muffed run outs.
The comedy of errors wasn’t restricted to the players though with the match officials involved in farcical scenes after third umpire Bruce Oxenford unwittingly giving Hussey out on one.
Oxenford blamed a technical malfunction as he attempted to give the not out call to a stumping review but “OUT” flashed on the big screen before the batsman trudged off, only to be recalled by the on-field umpires.

Now That's Impressive Parking - Queen Mary II's Royal Arrival in Brisbane
THE world's most famous cruise ship arrived in Brisbane yesterday and it was up to Ipswich's Captain Chris Gallagher to ensure the ship's safe arrival into port. Captain Gallagher of Karalee took control of the Queen Mary 2 at 3.30am yesterday as it floated off the coast at Mooloolaba.
He was one of two pilots guiding in the Queen Mary 2 for the final three hours of its trip before docking in the Brisbane River.
Despite its impressive size, Captain Gallagher said the Queen Mary 2 was easy to direct.
"The ship is very manoeuvrable. Despite its size it is very powerful and has an amazing propulsion system," he said.
"It's very much a team effort. It's not down to one person. There was a second commander who is like the captain and 10 other people on the bridge."
Preparations for the ship's arrival began over a year ago, and included a trip to Sydney for Captain Gallagher to meet the ship's crew.
"We actually spent a bit of time on a ship simulator at the Brisbane Airport and had a number of scenarios. We put in high winds and currents before the ship arrives so we know how it will perform once we get on board."
It was a happy moment once the ship had docked safely.
"It was exhausting. Once we got along side the dock there was a lot of relief. A high profile ship like that we don't want to it to go wrong."
He described taking control of the ship as one of his career highlights.
"It has to be. She's a very special ship and it would have to be up there when I look back on my career."
In 2009 Captain Gallagher piloted his first international vessel, the USS Ronald Reagan down the Brisbane River and into port.
Royal arrival
The Queen Mary 2 cost $1 billion to construct and is three times the size of the Titanic.
It is 345m long, 41m wide and travels at a top speed of 30 knots.
The ship has over 300 original art works, valued at over $5 million.

Brisbane’s Economy Will Double in 20 Years
IT is hoped Brisbane’s economy will double in 20 years, and the city will be home to an extra 340,000 workers in the next decade, under a new economic plan for the city.
Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk today unveiled the 20-year plan to boost jobs and economic growth on the back of the resources boom.
It aims to double Brisbane’s economy to $217 billion by 2031.
It’s also hoped an extra 343,000 workers will call the city home over the next decade.
Mr Quirk says there are 177 resource companies headquarters in Brisbane and more would follow if the city was smart about positioning itself as a global centre for resource industry technologies and services.
“The global expansion of resource industries is bringing an unprecedented window of opportunity to Brisbane and we are on the cusp of a resource-based economic transformation,” he said in a statement.
“For every direct job created in mining, a further 19 jobs are created across Brisbane in mining-related services and the great thing about these jobs is the majority of them are long-term high value professional services.”
He said a growing resource industry generated opportunities in a wide range of support services including financial, legal, specialist consulting, research and recruitment services.

Brisbane's Skyline to Light Up Again in 2012 and 2013
Brisbane's skyline will light up in a kaleidoscope of colour for the next two years with the Queensland Government announcing today continued support for Brisbane Festival's Santos City of Lights laser light show. Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said the choreographed light spectacular would be an opportunity for local families and visitors alike to get out and enjoy for free what has quickly become a centrepiece of Brisbane Festival
"After the fantastic performance for the inaugural show in 2011, I can today announce that Santos City of Lights will continue to feature as a major attraction on the Brisbane Festival calendar in the coming years," Ms Bligh said.
"Santos City of Lights is a great way to celebrate the city of Brisbane, our great lifestyle and all it has to offer.
"More than 185,000 people attended the 2011 event, reinforcing Brisbane's popularity as an arts and cultural hub.
"Attracting major events like Santos City of Lights is all part of our plan to continue building Queensland's bright future.
"In 2011, Santos City of Lights generated 5,600 visitor nights - which is great for the Queensland tourism industry, local businesses and jobs.
"That's why the Queensland Government, through Events Queensland, is investing in events like this as part of our record $174 million investment in events over four years."
Events Queensland CEO John O'Sullivan said Santos City of Lights was another highlight on Queensland's growing and dynamic event calendar.
"Securing Santos City of Lights for Brisbane Festival for a further two years is the latest addition to the calendar and further demonstrates Brisbane's ability to host major cultural events," Mr O'Sullivan said.
"Brisbane will also play host to a range of significant upcoming arts and cultural events including exclusives like QPAC International Performance Series, Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb, Portrait of Spain: Masterpieces from the Prado and the current Matisse:Drawing Life.
"This follows the successes of other events in 2011 like Surrealism: The Poetry of Dreams and the World Theatre Festival."
Brisbane Festival Artistic Director Noel Staunton said he was delighted Santos City of Lights would be a part of future festivals, and the ongoing support from Events Queensland and Santos is fantastic news for Brisbane and Queensland.
"Brisbane Festival was extremely proud to pioneer Santos City of Lights this year which was enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of spectators during the three weeks of the festival, and we look forward to creating another spectacular show in 2012," Mr Staunton said.
Mark Macfarlane, President Santos GLNG announced Santos' continued major sponsorship with the Brisbane Festival for 2012.
"Santos is pleased to announce the continuation of our major partnership with the Brisbane Festival to ensure that the Santos City of Lights show remains a feature of the 2012 Brisbane Festival", Mr Macfarlane said.
Dates for Brisbane Festival 2012 and Santos City of Lights will be announced early 2012.

Jewellers Optimistic as 2012 Fairs Approach
Anticipation is growing for the jewellery industry as the 2012 trade fair season approaches. The ‘jewellery trade fair season’ begins next month with Victoria hosting the Melbourne Jewellery Fair March 4-5 at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton Gardens, while the Brisbane Jewellery Fair takes place March 25-26 at the Brisbane Exhibition Centre in Southbank.
For the second consecutive year Australia will stage three jewellery fairs, with Sydney hosting the main event in September.
Director for wholesaler Ellani Collections, Paul Hicks, told Jeweller last year’s Melbourne fair was well supported and set in a positive atmosphere.
“I expect Melbourne to be even better for me this year,” Hicks said. “After a great Sydney fair and Christmas I’ve acquired a lot of new accounts and Melbourne has left me constantly busy.”
Hicks stressed the importance of having a third fair, saying it’s a great opportunity for retailers around the country to build relationships with suppliers and vice-versa.
“Australia and New Zealand is so spread out that it’s almost impossible to see everyone so the Melbourne and Brisbane fairs are great for everyone to come together,” Hicks added. “Retailing can be a tough gig at the moment so for them to see the wholesalers and form a view of where their business should head is beneficial.”
Duraflex Group director, Phil Edwards, said Thomas Sabo and Spinning Jewelry are launching new ranges at the Melbourne and Brisbane fairs.
“We’re using both fairs to launch two different products and hope to attain good feedback and high attendance rates,” Edwards told Jeweller. “We will have representatives from Thomas Sabo visiting Melbourne and overseas reps will be coming to Brisbane as well.”
Edwards intends to use both fairs as a solid testing ground for future years, with the supplier paying close attention to attendance and retailers’ feedback.
Royal Exhibition Centre in Melbourne's Carlton Gardens
“It’s unusual having two fairs so close together but this year’s fairs will be a testing ground for our new range of products,” Edwards said. “It will be a good chance to monitor retailers’ feedback and keep track of attendance levels.”
Registration
Fair organiser, Expertise Events advises that visitors to the 2011 fairs will have received a new Buyer Identification card making registration simple. Visitors with a blue photo card need only to mark the dates and present the card upon entry to the Melbourne and/or Brisbane fairs for immediate access.
Visitors still holding a past gold buyer card will be required to update their registration and new visitors or those updating their record can download a registration form from the Jewellery Fair website.
Expertise Events managing director, Gary Fitz-Roy said, “With three fairs along Australia’s east coast, the JAA Jewellery Fairs are an ideal chance for jewellery retailers to top-up their stocks and get in-tune with the latest trends after Christmas.”
Both the Melbourne and Brisbane trade fairs will each present over 90 exhibitors offering finished jewellery, retail services, watches and jeweller’s supplies.

Cirque du Soleil - 2012 Shows Australia
Cirque du Soleil returns to Australia with a spectacular new production for the whole family, presented under the blue-and-yellow Grand Chapiteau (Big Top).OVO is a headlong rush into a colourful eco-system teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. The insects' home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion.
When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives.
It's love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye - and the feeling is mutual.
The cast of OVO is comprised of 54 performing artists from 16 countries specializing in many acrobatic acts. One highlight of OVO is the stunning flying trapeze act, in which six flyers soar 40 feet in the air, making this the biggest act of its kind to ever be presented under a big top by Cirque du Soleil. It combines many circus disciplines, including banquine, Russian swing and swinging chair. The finale features 20 artists running, jumping and leaping up a 24-foot vertical wall.
OVO is overflowing with contrasts. The hidden, secret world at our feet is revealed as tender and torrid, noisy and quiet, peaceful and chaotic. And as the sun rises on a bright new day, the vibrant cycle of insect life begins anew.

Brisbane's Queen Street Mall Loses its Focus as People-Friendly Precinct

AT WHAT point does a pedestrian mall cease to be a mall and become a drinking and dining precinct through which pedestrians are funnelled, forced to negotiate its canyons as best they can?
It is a question that needs an answer, for Brisbane's Queen Street Mall is no longer the people-friendly place envisioned by its creators.
The last car drove down Queen St in 1981 and the mall was opened the following year, in time for the Commonwealth Games, initially bound by Edward and Albert streets.
I waited patiently for trams in Queen St as a youth, standing in the optimistically named Safety Zones in the middle of the road.
The Mt Gravatt tram would then trundle across the Victoria Bridge and turn left, my nostrils wrinkling as it passed The Fish Board, before carrying me on to my stop at Holland Park.
Queen St had been a thoroughfare since the colony's earliest days and its closure to vehicular traffic and transformation into a mall - denounced by critics as trendy town-planning madness that would cause traffic chaos - has been a spectacular success.
Along the way, however, its character has changed and it is time that the city reviewed how it looks and how it works.
Restaurants have gradually encroached on the thoroughfare.
Competing for space and attention with the restaurants are two newsagencies, a juice bar, a large visitors' centre and a stage from which lingerie models were banned mid-parade last week when their French knickers were deemed inappropriate by Brisbane Marketing.
The eateries are as much - or more - about drinking as eating, with roughly half their floor space taken up with tall drinking stands and red vinyl bar stools.
At least one adds flat-screen television sets to the mix.
"Catch all your live sport here in HD - open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week," proclaim the signs.
You might well ask if the mood and atmosphere of our subtropical capital is effectively captured by a bunch of beer drinkers sitting around in shorts and singlets watching some games of English soccer on television.
There is a tired sameness about the food and beverage venues, with their plastic-sheafed tourist menus.
The image is completely at odds with the critically acclaimed restaurants in the Eagle St precinct, which represent, in part, the true dining heart of the city.
Put simply, some of the restaurants do not present well. They possess neither chic nor style.
They are public bars serving pub food in the middle of the city's premier shopping zone.
I'll be accused of being elitist for saying so, but so be it.
I've been accused of worse crimes.
Simply, it is possible to project a casual ambience and still be inclusive and I refuse to concede that mediocrity is a virtue.
These venues need to undergo a complete refurbishment for, as they stand, they do the city a disservice.
Apart from their lack of aesthetic appeal, there are too many of them.
The juice bar should be relocated away from the mall.
When I visited last week, the cardboard boxes of carrots and oranges stacked beside it did nothing for the visual appeal of the mall.
Aesthetics aside, they intrude too much into the mall and impede pedestrian traffic.
Walk up from Edward St and the sprawl of the eateries forces you into a narrow channel where you battle against the opposing tide of humanity to make headway.
The Brisbane City Council has allowed these establishments to take over the mall and must make a considerable amount of money from the rent it charges them.
The concept behind the mall, however, was for it to be an amenity for citizens and visitors, a free-flowing oasis in the city heart, not a revenue stream for the Brisbane City Council.
In April, the $100 million renovation of the Wintergarden Centre opens.
This is as good a catalyst as any for a hard look at the mall and how it presents to the 26 million people who visit the precinct each year.
The Wintergarden project's development director, Chris McCluskey, voices the concerns of a number of tenants whose businesses line the mall and the owners of international brands who have spent significantly on shop fit-outs in the new centre.
"The landlords and the investors are doing these things and the city needs to do a bit of it by looking at how the mall is formed now," McCluskey says.
"Universally, the comment I get is that there is not enough space for people to walk around.
"There's too much clutter. Some of it is necessary and you need food and beverage outlets and a visitor information centre but is it composed the right way?
"Is what we offer appropriate for 2012 and beyond? They are the questions that are being asked."
Walking up the mall towards the Victoria Bridge, you come across a bare expanse of sun-baked stone outside the casino, a lesser version of the man-made Death Valley that is the City Square.
Beyond that lies South Bank, shimmering across the river like a mirage. How to get there? Trudge across the bridge in 100 per cent humidity with not a suggestion of shade to be found.
The mall, surely, should flow into South Bank and be linked to it by, at the very least, a covered walkway.
The city is changing. The mall needs to change with it.
