Relax in Brisbane this summer 08/12/2010

This summer, Brisbane comes alive with the sights and sounds of a range of world-class entertainment, international sporting matches and exclusive exhibitions that are sure to create one of the city’s most memorable summers in the past decade.

The city has already got the jump on the rest of the country by hosting the opening test match of the 2010 – 2011 Ashes cricket series.

While 21st Century: Art in the First Decade (Saturday 18 December to Tuesday 26 April) at the Gallery of Modern Art will celebrate works created and acquired between 2000 and 2010, the Woodford Folk Festival (Monday 27 December to Saturday 1 January) will mark a milestone of its own.

The Festival’s 25th Anniversary program is arguably the most exciting ever presented line-up, promising an epic journey into the kaleidoscope of Australian culture. With 620 national and international acts performing in 22 venues across Brisbane, the streets will also come alive with roving street theatre, parades, art and spontaneous performances throughout each day and night festival.

Brisbane Set to Rock in 2011

Queenslands' capital city goes by the nickname BrisVegas for a very good reason.

In 2011, Brisbane is set to rock all year long with a stellar line up of international artists and theatre productions that one would normally associate with the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas.

2010 will end on a high note with Linkin Park, Stereosonic, Gorillaz, Muse, U2, Blondie & The Pretenders, Human Nature, Jack Johnson, The Eagles and Bon Jovi all set to light up the stage during December. Queenslanders then will have very little time to let their Christmas lunch digest before they will be enticed to get up and party once more at the Woodford Folk Festival held over New Years.

If you are looking for something a little more energetic then Tommy & Phil Emmanuel performs at The Tivoli as part of their 50th Anniversary Tour, or you can rock out to Tool, Joe Cocker, Sting, Soundwave, Sunset Sounds music festival, Raggamuffin, Future Music Festival, Roxy Music and The Chemical Brothers all before the first games kicks off for the new NRL season. Then things really start to heat up with Beyond the Darkside, Usher and his OMC Tour, Good Charlotte, The Script, Disturbed, Maroon 5, Katy Perry California Dreams Tour and BIGSOUND 2011 which returns to Brisbane after a record breaking year in 2011.

For those of you who like a little more laid back entertainment then 2011 is also your year. You will be able to sing along with the Kenny Rogers and Neil Diamond, feel the love with Michael Buble or enjoy some good old fashion country music with US country music legend Alan Jackson.

2011 also brings a host of major stage and theatrical productions to Brisbane. January kicks off with the international stage sensation WICKED, which has played to sell-out theatres around the world. This magical production is set to wow audiences up until April. This is followed by the Brisbane Comedy Festival, World Theatre Festival, The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and a return by the every popular and ever spectacular Andre Rieu.

And to cap things off there are two exciting productions for the kids. The time-honoured stories of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast will spring from the storybooks and onto the stage in Disney Live! Mickey and his friends will journey through 'happily ever after' and discover the classic stories of three celebrated Disney Princesses.

LEONARD COHEN Returning to Brisbane for Encore Performance

Early last year audiences across Australia and New Zealand were privileged to experience the incomparable live talents of Leonard Cohen. Rapturous reviews followed, with many critics calling the shows the best they have ever seen. The tour went on to win the Helpmann Award for the Best International Concert in 2009. Those lucky enough to be in attendance at the concerts described them in glowing and effusive terms, earning the envy of those who had missed out on what many speculated would be the last opportunity to see Leonard Cohen on our shores.

Accordingly it is with no small amount of pleasure that The Frontier Touring Company announce that Leonard Cohen has agreed to return - with his amazing nine piece band and backing singers - to Australia and New Zealand for an encore series of concerts in October and November 2010.

Queensland Facebook page shows its true State of Origin colours

Rugby League fans and patriotic Queenslanders are being encouraged to log onto the Queensland Facebook page to make their own Maroons jersey in the lead up to the 2010 State of Origin series.

Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor said the campaign aimed to harness the passion of all Queenslanders.

"As a warm up to the State of Origin, we're urging Queenslanders to get behind the competition, customise their own Maroons jersey and proudly display it on their Facebook profile," Mr Lawlor said.

"Any Facebook user can participate in the 'make your own jersey' campaign which will encourage friends to vote for their favourite jersey designs.

"All jerseys will be published in the 'Hall of Fame' on the Queensland Facebook page."

The design with the most votes as of 4pm (AEST) on Friday 11 June will win two sought-after tickets to the second State of Origin game in Brisbane on 16 June, plus return flights and transfers from the winner's nearest capital city within Australia, one night's accommodation and a personalised Queensland jersey to wear to the game.

Tourism Queensland CEO Anthony Hayes said the aim of the 'make your own jersey' online campaign was to increase the Queensland Facebook fan base and engage users with a common purpose - to support and promote Queensland.

No NRL grand finals to be hosted in Brisbane

BRISBANE is out of the running to host NRL grand finals after the State Government bailed out of making a $25 million bid to bring as many as four to Suncorp Stadium.

Sydney is certain to host all grand finals until at least 2019, with the NRL partnership committee this week awarding a seven-year contract extension to the NSW Government.

Negotiations between the NRL and bid representatives to bring a grand final to Brisbane had been so advanced insiders considered they were an excellent chance of winning approval to host four grand finals in a 10-year period after NSW's current contract with the NRL ended in 2012.

The Courier-Mail understands the State Government would have been expected to pay $25million to the NRL to host those four grand finals – $6.25 million a game – which would have been a major draw for tourism to Brisbane.

Queensland tourism expected to recover quickly from cyclone

Cyclone Ului has failed to do any major damage to Queensland tourism infrastructure, according to early reports. The tropical cyclone slammed into the Whitsunday Coast on Sunday. Winds of up to 200 km/h flattened trees and tore air-conditioning units from walls.

Airlie Beach took a battering but Tourism Whitsundays chief executive Peter O’Reilly says the physical damage there appears relatively minor.

The cyclone caused booking cancellations and led to island resorts being evacuated and some beaches closed because of dangerous surf conditions, but industry leaders are confident of a swift recovery.

O’Reilly says Easter trade will help, the clean-up shouldn’t take long and the situation should soon return to normal.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said Ului represented more bad news for a region where the tourism industry had been hit by the global financial crisis.

“It will take some places weeks, at the very least, to fix broken windows and be fully operational again,” she said. “We are characterising it as a significant event with severe damage in some pockets, but not a catastrophic event.” She said her government would talk to affected businesses to see what help it could offer.

The storm was downgraded to a rain depression after weakening rapidly once it struck land.

Australia’s Tourist Arrivals Tops 12 million (Toursim Brisbane)

Australia’s Tourist Arrivals Tops 12 million

The number of international visitors coming to Australia has remained steady despite the tough conditions for tourism globally, according to the latest new tourism figures.
Figures released this week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics have highlighted Australia’s “resilience in the difficult economic climate”. Approximately 12.4 million people arrived in Australia during 2009 and 12.3 million left, making the total number of arrivals and departures almost 25 million.
Original forecasts predicted international departures would fall by almost 3 per cent last year, however they rose by over 8 per cent as Australia's economy fared relatively well throughout the global economic downturn. A record 6.3 million Australian residents made short-term departures, up from 5.8 million in 2008, according to the ABS research. The top three destinations for Australian travellers were New Zealand, the USA and Indonesia were while tourists visiting Australia were most likely to come from New Zealand, the UK and the USA. Traditionally strong markets such as Japan and Korea posted significant declines in arrivals mainly due to their local economic conditions.

Brisbane Marketing receives $72,000 tourism grant - 13 January 2010

Brisbane Marketing will receive a special funding grant of $72,000 to prepare a feasibility study and action plan for the North Ipswich Railway Workshops precinct and implement a plan for developing new tourism product in the Greater Brisbane Region, Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor announced today.

Mr Lawlor said the grant, part of $1 million in Queensland Government funding allocated to the state's 14 regional tourism organisations, would help Brisbane Marketing enhance the region's tourism credentials and help entice higher visitor numbers.

"These funds will allow Brisbane Marketing to conduct in-depth feasibility studies for further development of the North Ipswich Railway Workshops precinct and help identify what further tourism product is needed for the region," Mr Lawlor said.

"Brisbane already has some fantastic tourism product but both government and industry need to continue to raise the bar by looking for new opportunities and better ways of do ing things."

Mr Lawlor said in the year to September 2009, 913,000 international and 4.7 million domestic visitors spent time in Brisbane.

"These visitors spent $3.79 billion in Brisbane, making tourism one of the key economic drivers for the region," he said.

"The $1 million in grant funding is a State Government commitment to fund tourism development initiatives regional tourism organisations would otherwise be unable to undertake.

"Regional tourism organisations across the state will use their allocations for a range of projects from new product feasibility studies to industry education programs."

Mr Lawlor said the funding was part of the State Government's new Tourism Action Plan to 2012.

"Competition for the tourist dollar is increasingly fierce and it's important for destinations to constantly look at ways to improve their visitor experience - be it investigating new product opportunities, increasing customer service lev els or providing business advice and support to operators," he said.

"I was pleased to see so many high-quality submissions and look forward to seeing these projects come to fruition."

Brisbane hosts two international shows in fashion coup

Premier and Arts Minister Anna Bligh has announced a second international fashion exhibition, direct from London's Victoria & Albert Museum, will show at Queensland Art Gallery in March 2010.

The Premier said Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones, Saturday 27 March to Sunday 27 June, will be followed by the fashion blockbuster, Valentino, Retrospective - Past/Present/Future at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), Saturday 7 August to Sunday 7 November.

"Women and fashion lovers from all over the country will be heading to Brisbane for these two very special exhibitions," Ms Bligh said.

"Hats draws on the collections of London's Victoria & Albert Museum, renowned for its fine holdings of art and design.

”The exhibition has been developed in collaboration with one of the world’s foremost milliners, Stephen Jones, who will be in Brisbane for the launch.”

Hats will feature more than 250 works, from early pieces such as a 12th century Egyptian fez and a 17th century Doge's hat, to designs created for some of the world's great fashion houses, including Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood and Christian Dior.

The Valentino exhibition of 100 garments traces Valentino Garavani's career from the 1959 opening of his Rome fashion house to the present. Valentino himself will be in Brisbane for the launch of the stunning exhibition, which has been designed and realised by Les Arts Décoratifs, Paris, with the assistance of the Valentino fashion house.

Queensland Art Gallery Director Tony Ellwood said the Gallery was pleased to show these important fashion exhibitions.

"Valentino, Retrospective - Past/Present/Future will be complemented by an exhibition for children, featuring work drawn from the Gallery collection, which will explore the relationship between fashion and art," Mr Ellwood said.

Brisbane Shines in Asian Cities of the Future study

Brisbane’s foreign direct investment (FDI) strategy is ranked second in the Asia Pacific region, according to the Financial Times fDi Magazine, the world’s pre-eminent business and globalisation title.

The fDi Magazine released the ‘Asian Cities of the Future 2009/10’ study in its December / January edition, ranking the economic, business and financial strengths of 133 cities across the Asia Pacific region.

Brisbane’s second ranking in the ‘Best FDI Strategy’ category follows Hong Kong in lead position, a city that has more than five million residents than Brisbane and 26 investment offshore offices. Brisbane was also ranked tenth in the overall ‘Top 10 Asian Cities of the Future’, making it the first time the city has been ranked in the study.

Brisbane Marketing’s Investment Attraction division leads the FDI strategy for Brisbane in conjunction with Brisbane City Council, and managed the City’s submission for the study.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said Brisbane’s second place ranking reflected the fact Brisbane was now seen as a world-class destination for business and investment.

“Businesses are attracted by Brisbane’s highly skilled and creative workforce, consistently strong economic performance, high population growth and our relaxed lifestyle,” Cr Newman said.

“Brisbane’s diverse economy has benefited strongly from BCC’s 8-strong Sister City relationships which have netted us millions of dollars in overseas business and the foreign investment activities undertaken by Brisbane Marketing, such as our work with Seattle and Spanish cities.”

Brisbane Marketing’s Investment Attraction division is charged with attracting inward investment and managed Brisbane’s submission for the ‘Asian Cities of the Future 2009-10’ study.

Investment Attraction Director, Daniel Havas said the agency is continually refining its FDI strategy to help Brisbane capture investment opportunities within a rapidly changing economic landscape.

“Brisbane’s ranking in this study is a tremendous result given the size of our city compared with others in the top ten,” Mr Havas said.

“This is also a great example of how robust Brisbane’s FDI strategy is, especially when many of the top ten cities in the list have investment offices around the world.

“Brisbane Marketing has sharpened its FDI focus in the Asia Pacific on areas such as life sciences, clean energy, food and beverage and information communication technology. These sectors are expected to expand dramatically as Asia’s rising middle class will stimulate further demand,” Mr Havas said.

Australian cities Melbourne and Perth were also ranked in the FDI category, taking fourth and eighth place respectively.

The study was published in the fDi December/January edition and will be distributed at the Davos World Economic Forum in Switzerland in January.
